The Nitty Gritty...

I’ve been homeschooling for quite a few years now. As a military family, we've had time constraints and vacation times that haven't lined up with the rest of the world. I used to to try to get everything done, keep a perfect house, and ensure my kids were A students ALL of the time. Unfortunately, perfection does not equal happiness, and surely can create issues in the long run for you and your family. What I’ve learned is relaxing is key. I’ve learned to embrace the things that I love and wrap them into their lessons. Two examples are travel and hands-on activities. It’s our 'thing'. I’ve learned to follow my gut with my way of teaching, and to stop comparing myself or my kids to ‘all the other’ kids or parents in the community. I’ve learned to stop second guessing myself because we all know, kids see right through that. I signed on to be their educator, so if I am lacking confidence I’ve learned to find a resource to help me.

The first few years I homeschooled, I went from boiling water to ice in 2 seconds. I really had no idea what I was doing. See to me, my degree on the wall said ‘You’re smart’, I suppose. My experience running a successful business and the plaque in the hallway whispered ‘You can do this’. But I’ve learned, that once your dealing with your OWN children, you tie in parenting emotions which like to sometimes override the ‘I’m smart’ and ‘I can do this’ reminders you have sprinkled around your house. There were days where even my reflection wanted to smack me and say “why on earth are you staying home with your kids?!” And back then, I really didn’t know. I just knew, it was TORTURE.

But the truth is... staying home with my kids is the greatest gift I can give them, and time with them is the greatest gift I could give myself. Life is short, we all face many roads that will determine if homeschooling is even an option. TRUST me, walking away from some things I had been doing in life was HARD. But, I know now, this is absolutely where I am supposed to be. Life worked out to make it happen for me, the COVID pandemic made me lose my business that I loved so much, we hung by a thread for months and months, didn’t know how to pay bills, experienced depression, public embarrassment, but we never fell. And tho we lost members of our family very suddenly in that time period, we never lost our family bond. As I started opening my eyes to my BLESSINGS and stuffing down those depressed thoughts, I began to realize how lucky I was to be able now to focus 100% solely on my children’s education. So now I’m here to help you find your groove too.

I think one of the biggest things I want to emphasize to you, is to try to learn to go with the flow and let the little things go. I can’t tell you how many times we used to have a rotten week in general from someone not dotting the i or writing neat enough or coloring in the section they were supposed to color in. I hate to tell you my friend, but our babies are babies... only a few are naturally born rocket scientists, but I have never met one. Even then, those who never fail, never learn. Just remember, every master failed and failed some more until they got it right. And just like any skill, homeschooling/educating takes PRACTICE. Try not to make the kids associate angry teacher/school with mom. Remember, even open house at school only puts out the most impressive projects. Though you can make millions of memories, you can’t produce perfect projects every single day. There are things that your child will be better at or like more than you, and that’s ok. If you don’t understand how to teach them, find the resource to do so. There is just so much free content out there anymore, there’s no reason you can’t do it.

SO, I am here to help you find those tools and plan those out days to help you feel a little more successful in the homeschooling world. If you have questions, just email me. I won’t have all the answers, but as I have the time I will surely do my best to help you.
